The Luckiest 72 Hours in Las Vegas: Blackjack, Slots & One Pissed-Off Wife

Featured image showing the Luxor pyramid and Sphinx in Las Vegas at night, with the title The Luckiest 72 Hours I Ever Had in Vegas.

Three nights at Luxor. A blackjack winning streak that made absolutely no sense. A $965 slot ticket after three spins. And a wife who spent the day winning five bucks.

I spent 72 hours at Luxor winning so much money playing blackjack that I started thinking I might actually know what I was doing.

Then I wandered into the high-limit room, put $100 into a slot machine I’d never played before, and walked away with a $965 ticket after three spins.

My wife, Nikki, who actually plays slots, had spent the day winning five bucks.

She was not nearly as excited about my accomplishment as I was.

And the craziest part?

That stupid slot bonus changed the way I gamble. Years later, I’m still playing the same damn machine.

But it all started with a $200 blackjack buy-in.

Three Nights at Luxor, and I Couldn’t Seem to Lose

The iconic Luxor Hotel and Casino sphinx entrance on the Las Vegas Strip
The iconic Luxor entrance. Three nights here would turn into one of my luckiest Vegas trips.

I’ve stayed at Luxor Hotel & Casino several times over the years, and I’ve always liked the place.

I know it doesn’t have the greatest reputation. It’s an older casino, people love complaining about the pyramid rooms, and it’s not exactly the most convenient location on the Strip.

But I’ve always had a good time there.

Especially on this trip.

Nikki and I were staying for three nights in September 2023, and from the moment I sat down at a blackjack table, things started getting ridiculous.

My usual buy-in was $200.

I’d find a table, order a drink, and play for a couple of hours. Sometimes I’d win. Sometimes I’d lose.

That’s how it normally goes.

Except apparently nobody told Luxor.

I’d sit down with $200 and walk away with $500 or $600. I’d come back later, play some more, and somehow win again.

The dealers kept busting. My double downs were hitting. Even when I had a hand that looked like complete garbage, something would happen to save me.

I wasn’t doing anything differently.

I was just getting lucky.

I’ve spent years working on my game, and I’ve even written a complete guide to playing blackjack for people who want to understand basic strategy and avoid some of the mistakes beginners make.

But no amount of basic strategy guarantees a winning session.

Over the earlier part of the trip, I’d won around $900 playing blackjack.

And when you’re winning like that, something starts happening in your head.

You begin to think maybe you’ve finally figured this whole gambling thing out.

Of course, I hadn’t.

But another day or two of that winning streak, and I probably would’ve started charging people for blackjack lessons.

Fortunately, we were only there for three nights.

The first episode of my four-part Vegas story shows where this ridiculous run at Luxor got started.

Another $200 Buy-In, Another $455 in Profit

During another blackjack session at Luxor, I sat down with my usual $200.

Nothing unusual about the table. Nothing special about the way I was playing.

And once again, I started winning.

I was getting good hands, hitting doubles, and watching dealers bust when I needed them to.

At some point, I remember thinking this couldn’t possibly keep happening.

But it did.

By the time I decided to get up, my original $200 had turned into $655.

Another $455 in profit.

My $655 in Luxor casino chips after a $200 blackjack buy-in. That’s $455 in profit from one session.

Now, I know there are people in Vegas betting hundreds of dollars a hand who wouldn’t get excited about winning $455.

I’m not one of those people.

I’d just spent a couple of hours playing blackjack, drinking, and walking away with more than three times my buy-in.

That’s a pretty good night as far as I’m concerned.

I’ve experimented with different betting approaches over the years, including some questionable decisions I talked about in my Martingale betting strategy article.

But this wasn’t some elaborate system.

I was just winning.

I decided to go find Nikki and tell her how well I’d done.

I should’ve just walked over, showed her the chips, and enjoyed the rest of the evening.

Unfortunately, I had to walk through a casino to find her.

And that’s where things got expensive.

Not immediately.

That came later.

Watch Part 2: The Blackjack Streak Continues

Another winning blackjack session, and at this point Luxor was being suspiciously generous.

The $15 Slot Machine I Had No Business Playing

Inside the casino floor at Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas with slot machines and gaming areas
The Luxor casino floor, where an innocent walk to find my wife turned into an expensive new hobby.

Before this trip, I wasn’t much of a slot player.

Blackjack was my thing.

Nikki played slots.

We had our own little gambling arrangement. She could sit at a machine for hours watching bonuses and free spins, while I’d wander around looking for a blackjack table with decent rules.

But I’d recently started watching a lot of slot videos on YouTube.

You know the ones.

Some guy walks into a high-limit room, puts a few hundred dollars into a machine, and five minutes later he’s celebrating a massive jackpot.

Meanwhile, I’m watching from my couch thinking, That doesn’t look too difficult.

One machine I kept seeing was Top Dollar.

I’d never actually played it before, but I’d watched enough videos to understand how the bonus offers worked.

So there I was, walking through Luxor looking for Nikki, when I spotted a Top Dollar machine in the high-limit room.

Five-dollar denomination.

Three credits per spin.

Fifteen dollars every time you pushed the button.

Now, keep in mind, I’m the same guy who will walk halfway across a casino looking for a blackjack table with better rules because I don’t like giving the house an extra advantage.

But apparently spending $15 every few seconds on a slot machine seemed perfectly reasonable.

I’d been winning all trip.

What the hell?

I put $100 into the machine.

First spin.

Nothing.

Second spin.

Nothing.

Third spin.

Top Dollar bonus.

You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

Three Spins and a $965 Ticket

If you’ve never played Top Dollar, the bonus gives you an offer. You can take it or reject it and try for something better.

The game is made by IGT, and you can learn more about the company and its casino games on the official IGT website.

I’d watched people do it on YouTube plenty of times.

But now I was sitting in front of the machine trying to remember what the hell those people usually did.

Was this a good offer?

Should I take it?

Should I try again?

My heart was pounding.

I’ve played blackjack for years. I’ve won plenty of hands, had some nice sessions, and made some pretty good decisions at the tables.

But this was completely different.

I had no idea what I was doing.

A few moments later, the machine was finished, and I had a ticket worth $965.

Actual $965 Luxor Hotel and Casino winning ticket from a Top Dollar slot machine on September 22, 2023
The actual $965 ticket from my Top Dollar win at Luxor on September 22, 2023. Three spins, one bonus, and a slot machine I’ve been playing ever since.

Nine hundred and sixty-five dollars.

That included the original $100 I’d put into the machine, meaning I’d made $865 in actual profit.

And it took three spins.

Three.

I’d spent hours at a blackjack table working my way to a $455 profit.

Then I sat down at a slot machine, pushed a button three times, and won another $865.

That’s $1,320 in profit between those two sessions.

I cashed out immediately.

No extra spins.

No trying to hit another bonus.

I was done.

I remember feeling like I’d gotten away with something.

I’d spent years learning blackjack strategy, worrying about table rules, and trying to make good decisions.

Then I pressed a button three times and made nearly twice as much money as I’d made during my entire blackjack session.

Wonderful game.

Watch Part 3: The Top Dollar Bonus

This was the moment a blackjack player accidentally discovered his favorite slot machine.

My Wife Had Been Playing Slots All Day. She Won Five Dollars.

Now I really couldn’t wait to find Nikki.

I’d just won $455 playing blackjack and another $865 in profit on Top Dollar.

I figured she’d be excited.

That was optimistic.

Nikki had been playing slots for most of the day.

And after all that time, she’d managed to win about five dollars.

Not five hundred.

Five.

So when I found her and started explaining what had happened, she wasn’t exactly celebrating.

“How the hell did you do that?”

I explained that I’d walked through the high-limit room, put $100 into a Top Dollar machine, and hit the bonus on my third spin.

“You don’t even play slots!”

She was pissed.

And honestly, I understood.

She actually enjoys slot machines. She knows the games, watches the bonuses, and spends hours playing them.

Meanwhile, I wandered into the high-limit room because I’d watched a couple of guys playing Top Dollar on YouTube.

Three spins later, I had a $965 ticket.

It wasn’t fair.

I couldn’t argue with her.

But I also wasn’t going to apologize for winning $965.

She had five bucks.

I had $965.

Marriage is full of these little moments.

So How Much Did I Actually Win at Luxor?

By the time that trip was over, I’d experienced one of the most ridiculous gambling hot streaks of my life.

And I want to make the numbers clear because there’s a difference between a cashout ticket and actual gambling profit.

Gambling Session Amount
Earlier blackjack sessions About $900 profit
Additional blackjack session $455 profit
Top Dollar cashout ticket $965
Original slot buy-in -$100
Total Estimated Profit $2,220

This is the estimated combined profit from the sessions described, before any other gambling losses or vacation expenses.

I wasn’t counting cards.

I wasn’t using some complicated betting system.

And I certainly hadn’t discovered a secret to beating the casino.

I was just having a ridiculous run of luck.

It was one of those rare Vegas trips where everything seemed to work.

Well, everything except keeping my wife happy.

She was still pretty annoyed about that Top Dollar ticket.

I was still pretty happy about it.

Different perspectives.

Luxor is part of MGM Rewards, and if you’re interested in the property itself, you can check out the official Luxor casino website.

I’ve written before about how much gambling it takes to earn MGM Gold status, but I’ve never been interested in chasing rewards by throwing away a winning trip.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is cash out and enjoy being ahead.

Watch Part 4: How the Luckiest 72 Hours Ended

The final part of my four-video series wraps up one of the strangest winning streaks I’ve ever experienced in Las Vegas.

That One Top Dollar Bonus Changed How I Gamble

Here’s the part I didn’t see coming.

Before that trip, I barely played slots.

I was a blackjack guy.

I’d watch Nikki play occasionally, but I never understood why she enjoyed sitting at a slot machine for hours.

Then I hit that Top Dollar bonus.

And suddenly, I understood.

Every time I walked through a casino and saw a Top Dollar machine, I’d remember Luxor.

I’d remember that third spin.

The bonus.

The $965 ticket.

And I’d think, Maybe.

Maybe I’d hit it again.

So I’d sit down and play.

Usually, nothing happened.

I’d put some money in, spin a few times, and eventually walk away wondering where the hell my bonus went.

But the next time I saw a Top Dollar machine, I’d remember Luxor all over again.

Eventually, I started trying other slots, too.

Before I knew it, I was playing blackjack and slots on my Vegas trips.

All because of one stupid bonus.

I don’t even want to know how much money I’ve put through Top Dollar machines over the years.

It probably wouldn’t be a very enjoyable number to look at.

I’m Still Playing Top Dollar Years Later

Want to know how ridiculous this has gotten?

I played Top Dollar on my phone recently.

Seriously.

Put $25 in.

Won another $75.

Cashed out $100.

Not bad.

And the funny thing is, after all these years, I still think about that night at Luxor whenever I play.

I’ve had countless blackjack sessions since then. I’ve won, I’ve lost, and I’ve spent plenty of nights wandering around Las Vegas casinos.

But I still remember that Top Dollar bonus.

The third spin.

The $965 ticket.

Nikki getting pissed.

Every bit of it.

I’ve probably lost more money playing Top Dollar over the years than I’d like to admit.

And I know that just because I hit a bonus on my third spin at Luxor doesn’t mean the next machine owes me anything.

But if I walk into a casino tomorrow and see a Top Dollar machine sitting there, there’s a pretty good chance I’m putting some money into it.

Maybe I’ll hit that bonus again.

Maybe I won’t.

Either way, it’s still my favorite slot machine.

I went to Luxor as a blackjack player and left as a blackjack player who also likes slots.

All it took was three spins.

Somewhere at Luxor, there’s probably a marketing executive who deserves a raise.

Frequently Asked Questions About My Luckiest Vegas Trip

How much money did you win during your 72 hours at Luxor?

I won approximately $900 during the earlier blackjack sessions, followed by another $455 in blackjack profit and $865 in Top Dollar slot profit. That’s approximately $2,220 combined profit from those sessions before considering any other gambling losses or trip expenses.

How much did you win on the Top Dollar slot machine?

My cashout ticket was worth $965, including the original $100 I’d put into the machine. My actual profit was $865. I still have the photograph of that ticket from September 22, 2023.

How many spins did it take to hit the Top Dollar bonus?

Exactly three spins at $15 per spin. I hit the bonus on the third spin.

What is the Top Dollar slot machine?

Top Dollar is a slot game from IGT known for its bonus feature where players receive cash offers and decide whether to accept them or reject them for another offer. It became my favorite slot after that first big win at Luxor.

Is Top Dollar a good slot machine to play in Las Vegas?

It’s entertaining if you enjoy offer-based bonuses, but that doesn’t mean you’re more likely to win. The machine still has a built-in house edge, and one lucky bonus doesn’t make future bonuses more likely.

Is blackjack better than slots for winning money?

Blackjack generally offers a lower house edge than many slot games when you play with favorable rules and follow basic strategy. It also gives players more decisions to make. Personally, I still prefer blackjack, but I enjoy slots now, too.

Can you win big with only $100 on a high-limit slot machine?

Absolutely, but you can also lose that money very quickly. At $15 per spin, $100 doesn’t last long when the machine isn’t paying. My Top Dollar bonus was a lucky result, not something anyone should expect to happen regularly.

Do you still play Top Dollar?

Yes. I still play it in casinos and on my phone. I recently deposited $25, won $75, and cashed out $100. All these years later, I’m still playing the same game.

More Real Las Vegas Stories From Double Down Mac

Luxor Hotel and Casino swimming pool area in Las Vegas
There’s more to Vegas than gambling, although I occasionally have trouble remembering that.

I’ve had plenty of memorable nights in Vegas, but this particular trip to Luxor still stands out.

Not just because of the money, but because of how ridiculous the whole thing was.

Three nights of winning blackjack sessions, a completely unexpected slot bonus, and a wife who wasn’t particularly thrilled about my success.

That’s the kind of Vegas I love.

The unexpected wins, the old casinos, the cheap drinks, the questionable decisions, and the stories you end up talking about for years.

It’s also why I wrote Find Your Vegas, because everyone’s version of a great Las Vegas trip looks a little different.

Mine just happens to include a lot of blackjack and occasionally making my wife angry.

If you’ve ever had one ridiculous casino win that turned a game into your favorite, I’d love to hear about it.

Follow Double Down Mac for real Las Vegas stories, blackjack adventures, cheap drinks, questionable gambling decisions, and the occasional argument with my wife.
